A Behind the Scenes Look at Scripture

As a student of scripture, I am constantly wondering what was going on, behind the lens that scripture is told from. For example: I can easily imagine having been on the boat with Peter and the rest of the Disciples in Mat. 14:22-33 when Peter and the other Disciples were told by Jesus to get into their boat and go to the other side of the Sea.

So,,, they did just that, but somewhere between 1:00 and 4:00 a.m., while the sea worked up a frenzy and tossed them around in their boat, they saw what appeared to be a ghost walking by on the water and they were totally freaked out until Jesus (knowing of their fear) yelled out and identified himself.

Bam! Just like that, Peter pop’s the question and suggests that Jesus ask Peter to come out to him. Now, with a show of hands,,, who would have been the person to do what Peter did? Seriously? Odds are, less than 1 in 1,000 have the type of personality that is so daring!

Keep in mind though, according to research, even those people would need some kind of confidence in the waters ability to support them, before they extended the dare.

Now imagine you are in the boat and you are taking this whole thing in, when suddenly, you see Peter throwing his leg over the side like he has something to stand on! But you know that it is dark! It’s deep! It’s tempestuous and it’s totally CRAZY! But your friend Pete is stepping out into what is almost certainly going to end completely wrong!

What are you saying to him at this point? Are you yelling? Are you raising your voice very calmly? Are you reaching out to grab his arm and hold him back? Are you suggesting he has gone INSANE? I can imagine you are not expecting him to stand up as though the water is supporting him once he has pushed himself off of the side of the boat! And you are most certainly not expecting him to walk on the water once he does… Right? Here’s how the story goes:

MATTHEW 14: 22-33

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat was already a considerable distance[a] from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

25 During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.

27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Scripture does not tell us what is going on behind the scenes and I enjoy being able to imagine what his friends were thinking as Peter stepped out… What would you do? By what we see in scripture, Peter was not looking for a dare,,, he was not out to prove anything to his friends, he just wanted to be close to and doing the same things as Jesus!

Do we know anybody that has the same degree of passion about being close to, or like Jesus? Here’s a defining question, do we know anyone who has the kind of faith that is willing to step completely out of the logical place to be?

Think about it; The boat was intentionally designed to get them across the water, but what Peter was doing was by all accounts, illogical and just plain idiotic!

No wonder Jesus loved Pete’s attitude enough to build the entire New Testament Church off of his passion.

I want to find that place,,, do you? I want to know that level of pleasure in the eyes of God… How about you?

Unforgiving and tumultuous, deep dark seas

Would you have stepped out!
